Depends on how many clients you are serving - under windows IOCP (Input/Output Completion Port) is regarded as the best way to do it but is a difficult to implement properly, and you will see no real benefit until 5000 users or so. For 100-5000 users, you can use a simple thread pool with asynchronous calls, and for less than 100 users a one-thread-per-client architecture will work perfectly (and is trivial to implement).
