As a musician, I would recommend one of the Yamaha Student model flutes. Beautiful sound, beautiful instruments, but still affordable-Caitlin The Gemeinhardt 2SP is also a wonderful-and fairly inexpensive-Flute for a beginner. Avoid "open hole" models as they are much more difficult to control! And remember: only perfect practice makes perfect!-InThree21
I prefer Jupiter, although they can be a little expensive (around $900)

Either the soprano or the alto both of these require less lung capacity, but the alto is probably your best bet as it is the standard beginner's sax.
Personally, I have always been a big fan of the Gemeinhardt. They have really nice beginner flute, french flutes which are open holed, professional and even beautiful piccolos. They have good quality and I find that they have the best sound.

The violin is a harder instrument to master than the flute. Both can be beautiful. It is also good to learn a lesser used instrument such as a bassoon or viola.
