How do you mail an oil painting overseas?

I'd say wrap the painting in plastic and put it in a wide, thin strong cardboard box. Mark it as FRAGILE, so the postal service will handle it with care. Do not use paper towels or toilet paper to wrap the painting. Bits of the paper will get stuck to it.

For a frameless portrait that you hang as is:

• The best way is to buy thin strips of wood - 4 pieces - each pair an inch longer then the length and width.
• Staple two onto the top and bottom of the picture.
• Then perpendicular to the strip, staple or tape on the smaller pieces of wood (usually about 2 inches) this will stop any movement within the box and any direct contact.
• Place this in a fitting cardboard box.
• Place Styrofoam around the cardboard box and put it in a slightly bigger cardboard box

For a thin frameless portrait, buy a cheap frame and repeat the above steps.
