Best Answer

The nest is a mass of bubbles on the surface of the water made out of air filled sacs These are produced from a material similar to our spittle/saliva that is produced in the male Bettas labyrinth, mouth and glands when he is preparing to breed. If available the fish will include bits of plant as well. Once the nest is built the male embraces the female under this nest and the ova are expelled by the female, then they are fertilised, collected by the male and blown into the nest where they are looked after by the male. All Anabantids make similar constructions when breeding.
