To possess is to own.

- In grammar, possessive nouns, pronouns and adjectives show ownership or origin.

- In the context of a relationship possession is more about dominance and control, than ownership. A possessive person will view and treat their partner in the same way they would a pet, such as a dog. They would control the environment and withhold or provide food, shelter, and stimulation as they see fit. Through constant manipulation, bullying and feedback, the desired behaviors are shaped. A possessive person will make your decisions for you. What you eat, who you see, what you wear, when you sleep, when you are allowed to leave and when you must stay. They will monitor your activities and claim to know what you are thinking and feeling. Truly possessive/abusive partners take this a step further and tell you what you are thinking and feeling. Over time, they exert more and more control, and in essence, brainwash their partners.
