In Art History terminology Ancient Art generally refers to the time period beginning around 35,000 BC, during the Paleolithic era, and ending with the Middle Ages, circa 400-1400 AD. Modern Art is also considered a movement that dates from 1860-1970. Some characteristics of modernism are a radically new attitude towards subject matter and a breakdown in the traditional sources of financial support from Patrons like the church, state and Aristocrats. Abstraction, Earth Art, Pop Art and Surrealism are all forms of Modern Art. In this respect modern does not refer to the contemporary, and numerous movements have occurred since 1970. Post-Modern Art follows Modern Art, current art is usually referred to as Contemporary Art.
