Medals are awards. When you earn one, you're given the medal itself, a ribbon for your ribbon bar, a certificate that says what you did to earn the award and a set of orders for your military personnel file.

Sometimes that certificate is pretty vague, especially if what you did was classified or they still haven't figured out what you actually did even though it was pretty neat.
