A riot is violent public disorder. For example, the famine led to widespread bread riots. A revolution means a real change in the political system, for example, the FrenchRevolution, the Russian Revolution. The word is also used figuratively in the sense of drastic change, as in the Industrial Revolution.

Protest is when you are displaying your disagreement and unhappiness for something and yu do not want something to happen eg. a new law is being passed and you do not like it, you protest. The Prime minister of a country is coming to your country whom you do not want to for some reasons, you protest.

Revolution is a big change eg. you are trying to change the whole govermnment in your country. eg Egypt was demanding democracy in the country, that was a revolution.

Generally the terms are synonymous. However, insurrections are usually military uprisings with the military being the only participant. Whereas in a revolution the military and civilians both participate.
