The orifice is an opening such as the nostrils, mouth, etc. The sphincter is a muscle. These are like valves that only allow certain materials to go in and out and are often very tight, resulting in the action of peristalsis.

∙ 11y agoA valve is a structure in a hollow organ (like the heart) with a flap to insure one-way flow of fluid through it whereas a sphincter is an opening of skin and surrounded by muscle that physically restricts and controls the passage of substances through the digestive tract. There are three main sphincters in the digestive tract: the esophageal sphincter, the pyloric sphincter and of course the anal sphincter.
