Whiskey is a distilled barley brew. It's filtered through burnt peat to give it that awful taste.

Rum is fermented and distilled sugar cane.

Brandy is wine with higher alcohol content.

Whiskey is distilled from fermented grain. Moonshine is a common name. Moonshine can be very good depending on who makes it, and what his grain combination is. Moonshine has a bad name, basicly because it is illegal, due to the fact the federal government does not collect tax on it. Beer usually contains barley not whiskey. Whiskey is normal filtered through activated charcoal and then placed in charred oak barrels to mello with age.

Rum is made from the fermented residue of cooking the juice of sugar cane to produce sugar.

Brandy is not wine, it is distilled wine which produces a much higher alcohol content. As Brandy is not wine, niether is Cognac to be cosidered Brandy. Cognac is the top quality of brandy. It may be considered that Cognac is Brandy, but not all brandy can be cognac.

I tend to go with spiced rum for the vanillas and sweet spices, particularly if you're doing a real hot buttered rum with just rum, butter, hot water and a bit of sugar. Of them, I'd recommend Sailor Jerry's which is not only less expensive than something like Captain Morgan, but a far superior flavor.
