Think of 0 dimensions as a point, 1 dimension as a line, and 2 dimensions as a square (it can be a number of 2D shapes).

If you convert a square into 3D, you could have a cube, or stated another way:

The side of a 3D object is 2D (the side of a cube is a square).

What is the difference between 3d shapes and 2d shapes?

The difference between 2d and 3d shapes is that, a 2d shape is flat, has no volume and depth and cannot be handled while a 3d shape can be held, has depth, volume and can hold things inside it. These are the dimensional shapes which are mostly used in geometry.
