You cant tell the size of a galaxy depending on what Astronomers call it. A spiral galaxy could be 100 light years wide, and an irregular could be over 10,000 light years across, or visa versa.
Elliptical Galaxies are big balls of stars that may be round or cigar shaped with a bright nucleus. Apart from the nucleus there is no obvious structure in the galaxy, they look 'smooth'.
Irregular Galaxies have an irregular outline and frequently no dense nucleus.
Spiral Galaxies are disk shaped with a bulgy nucleus. The disk may display one or more spiral arms where the stars in the disk are clumped up more.
With a Barred Spiral Galaxy, the spiral arms (usually two) do not wind in all the way to the nucleus but stop at either end of a bar of dense stars which projects either side of the nucleus.
Irregular galaxies have no definite shape, some are made up of designs and colors bizarre, surreal. The causes of irregularity in the shape form of these systems are unknown, as are other causes of morphological types. Some astronomers attribute the irregular shape form to the gravitational forces that have not yet formed a standard gyroscopic, which would lead to the assumption that these galaxies would be relatively young. Some irregular galaxies are actually small spiral galaxies that have been distorted by the gravity of a bigger nearby galaxy.
Spirals have arms, like our own milky way. They look like spinning pinwheels. But it is different by shape.Ellipticals have oval shapes. It has old and faint stars, like m32.Spirals and ellipticals have a particular shape.Irregulars have no particular shape, just like the magellanic clouds.
Primarily the appearance or shape. Other galaxies are so far away that sometimes even with our best telescopes we cannot really make out what they look like.
A spiral galaxy is a "spiral" without a physical bar structure. Whereas a barred spiral galaxy has an obvious central bar.
See related pictorial for a better idea.
It's impossible to answer as judging the size of a galaxy is not precise and we have not measured all the galaxies.
Also, an irregular galaxy can be a disrupted spiral galaxy.
Because irregular galaxies have no definite shape.
An irregular galaxy. See related question.
Galaxies that appear to have a bulge in the middle and arms that spherical outward, like pinwheels, are spherical. Elliptical galaxies look like round or flattened balls. Galaxies that do not have regular shapes are known as irregular galaxies.
There are three main types: spiral, elliptical and irregular.
Galaxies have different shapes because of what happens throughout their lives. Any galaxy, at one point or another, will encounter another or many galaxies. When encounters occur, gravity takes over. The larger of the two galaxies will consume the smaller one, this is called galactic cannibalism. The act of absorbing another galaxy will change the size of the galaxy it's shape and even the speed of its rotation. Our own galaxy, The Milky Way, is as large it is (100000-150000 Light years across.) because of galactic cannibalism. The Milky Way is as we speak consuming two other small galaxy. And in about 2 billion years, our nearest nieghbor, the Andromeda Galaxy, will collide with our galaxy. Both the Milky Way and Adromeda galaxy are spiral galaxies, but after they collide the resulting new galaxy will an elliptical galaxy, which looks like a bright white sphere.

There are various ways of categorising galaxies, often based on Edwin Hubble's work on the shapes galaxies. Classifications often give the four main types of galaxies as: Spiral (including barred spiral), Elliptical, Lenticular and Irregular.
spiral, elliptical, and irregular. The only differences are shape. Elliptical galaxies are shaped like an ellipse, spiral galaxies like a spiral or pinwheel, and irregular don't have a uniform shape
