it is used in surgeries, in place of blood transfusions.

the most important general factor for erythropoiesis is the hormone erythropoietin. it is also called hemopoietin or erythrocyte stimulating factor.source:peritubular cappillaries in the kidney secrete erythropoietin. the stimulant for its secretion is hypoxia. it is a glycoprotein with 165 amino acids. actions:erythropoietin causes formation and release of new RBCs into circulation. after secretion, it takes 4 to 5 days to show the action.

it promates:

the production of proerythroblasts from the stem cells in CFU- E of the bone marrow.

the development of proerytroblasts into matured RBCs through the normoblastic stages- early, intermediate and late normoblasts and reticulocyte.

release of matured erythrocytes into blood. even some reticulocytes(immature erythrocytes) are released along with matured RBCs.
Erythropoietin is a hormone that controls the red blood cell production. Some times Erythropoietin is used to treat anemia resulting from kidney failure or cancer.
This is a signally molecule, actually a glycoprotein, that is sent from the kidneys, for instance, and travels to the bone marrow of the femur where it initiates the red blood cell synthesis process.
