Amphetamine, Methamphetamine, Dextroamphetamine, whether Methamphetamine Sulphate or Mixed Salts, Benzedrine, Dexedrine, meth, crystal, a lot of other names: "speed". A stimulant, a psychostimulant of the phenethylamine class: it speeds you up; it curbs your appetite; it helps you control your weight; it keeps you from going to sleep or getting to sleep. The powder is bitter, and if an amphetamine capsule starts to melt in your mouth, the bitter taste stays with you a long time. Amphetamine treats narcolepsy and fatigue. Amphetamine and Ritalin [a related drug] are used to treat ADD and ADHD, especially in children. It increases your metabolism, as well as reducing your appetite: it is effective in losing weight. However, the stress on the body is fantastic. Long-term use and abuse leads to emaciation and paranoia, similar to cocaine abuse: crack heads and meth freaks have some of the same symptoms. Repeated use is a terrible burden on the heart and body. Imagine part of your face sloughing off when you were talking to somebody, and you not noticing it. I watched that happen to somebody who was a meth freak, while they were talking to me.

The Wikipedia has a decent article on Amphetamine, if you want to get more details about how the drug works, increasing dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, and so on.

"Meth" is a slang term for the drug methamphetamine. This substance is a powerful synthetic stimulant which is used medicinally to treat disorders such as ADHD (though amphetamine is often preferred for this purpose). Illicitly, it is used for its stimulant and euphoriant properties. It can be highly addictive, and thus is a controlled substance.
