The purpose of drums in battles was to be able to keep the troops in time when they were marching towards the enemy. this is because, up until the point where they realized there was better tactics available, most battles was a straight up march towards the enemy, shooting your rifle as fast as possible, slowly walking towards the enemy, until you hit the 30m mark, and just stood in a line, shooting at each other. the soldiers had to be in a straight line for this to work, so they would have people with snare drums at regular intervals, hitting out a regular beat, to keep in time to while they were marching.
