Protection is automatic as soon as the work is fixed in a tangible medium; the timeline for formal registration depends on the country or organization you are registering through, and whether you apply online or through the mail.

Under current law, copyright exists upon creation of a work in a tangible form; writing or typing a manuscript, making a painting, drawing or sculpture, or recording or scoring a musical work. Copyright registration makes a legal public record that a work exists, and ensures protection for its author or other copyright owner.

Registration is not necessary in a general sense (all the same, any copies given out or sold should carry a notice of copyright), but is essential should a copyright be infringed. Preregistration allows the owner to pursue punitive damages against infringement, where otherwise they may only be entitled to actual damages in court.
