Lanthanum's atomic number is 57. Thus, it has 57 protons and 57 electrons. Therefore, as we fill up orbitals towards a value of 57, we eventually get the electron configuration of 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 4d10 5s2 5p6 5d1 6s2. It's much easier to shorten this to [Xe] 5d1 6s2 since xenon's electric configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 4d10 5s2 5p6.
