However it is the same stylized alphabetical symbolism employed by the National Socialist German Workers Party in its swastika symbol - two "S" letters combined as a symbol of their socialism (see the work of the symbologist Dr. Rex Curry). The original Volkswagen logo was a swastika within a cog wheel, until the logo was changed to the V and W letters combined.
