The genus of geckos is actually one specific subfamily with multiple genus's. For example. Family: Gekkonidae Subfamily: Diplodactylinae Genus: Rhacodactylus. There are multiple genus of gecko all from different subfamily's, ranging from different parts of the world. Researchers will categorize animals by specifics; Location, scale sizes, temperament, nocturnal/ diurnal dwelling, claws/ setae etc..

Reptiles are a class; that's a classificaton bigger than a genus. The hierarchy is Kingdom -- Phylum -- Class -- Order -- Family -- Genus -- species.

For example, the Eastern Diamondback is Class Reptilia (incl. turtles and gators), Order Squamata (the snakes and lizards); Family Crotalidae; Genus Crotalus; species horridus
