Answer Contractions of the muscles move the Bolus to a Valve called the CARDIAC SPHINCTER VALVE where the Esophagus joins the Stomach.? The Sphincter allows food to pass into the stomach but usually NOT Letting it move Back Up into the Esophagus. This therefore prevents gastroesophageal reflux disease (gastric reflux)

The Cardiac sphincter Muscle(also called the LES) is a muscle that closes to prevent stomach contents (acids) from entering the esophagus. A defect in this muscle is called GERD- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (aka Reflux)

The lower esophageal (cardioesophageal) sphincter relaxes when a bolus of food travels down the esophagus. It also prevents stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus although many people have problems with that anyway.

Cardiac means related to heart. You have the cardiac sphincter, that is present in the stomach. The sphincter in near the upper end of the stomach, which is 'near' the heart. This sphincter prevents the back flow of acid and enzyme into the oesophagus. Thus protects the oesophagus from damage.

Where does a bolus of carbohydrates travel in the digestive system from mouth to anus?

Bolus goes down esophagus, through lower esophageal sphincter (aka, cardiac sphincter) and into stomach. (A sphincter is a circular muscle which squeezes shut or opens the tubular digestive tract). It then passes through pyloric sphincter into small intestine. The small intestine is made up first of the duodenum, then jejunum, then ileum. From ileum, bolus goes to ascending colon, then transverse colon, then descending colon. From there to rectum and then out through anus (anal sphincter) .
