How did gangs start?

It was said somewhere that gangs were first started as sort of a protection method from racial crimes being committed against black people. Younger people would form groups to watch their neighborhood from any such crimes. Eventually, the groups started getting into fights with each other. I heard this on TV somewhere

Some Gangs were inadvertent. Car Clubs began in the 30's and 40's and slowly turned into gangs. Tagging Crews began spraypainting and turned into gangs. As the answer above states, protection.

While gangs are created for protection, they were also created so they could create a brotherhood between people. The earliest gangs known in the US started in the 1780's, which is almost immediately after the Revolutionary war

Gangs in ancient days were usually referred to as clans. Clans would protect their community through extortion or act as thieves. Today's gangs are no different in the sense that they usually deal illicitly in illegal activities and share the wealth among themselves.

there weren't really gangs at the beginning but their were mobs.

Added: There have been "gangs' of one type or another ever since the dawn of mankind. They are not a strictly US phenomenon.
