The Egyptians believed you would go on a journey in a boat after you died to go live with the gods. People would be mummified so they don't rot on their journey and their grave filled with food so they wouldn't starve on their journey. If you were a Pharaoh or a queen, your grave would be filled with food and gems and jewels. If you were a very horrible person in life, you would cease to exist, or you would go to the true realm of the dead, where the dead walks upside down and one ray of sunlight would be wonderful for the ruler of it. There were also a lot of other places you would go in death based on your choices.
Why the afterlife is so important. It should be the most important thing - to everyone. It is the real life. The permanent life. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that when a person lives in this world it is as if he is asleep. When he dies, he wakes up.
We will be judged according to our beliefs, and deeds. Those who believed in the One and Only God, and worshipped Him alone, doing good deeds and believing in Heaven and Hell, will enter Paradise. Even if there are some sins which God determines he must be punished for, eventually, all believers in the One God (with no partners, no equals, and NO OFFSPRING) will enter Paradise. Those who rejected God, or worshipped other than God, those who come with many sins for which they did not seek mercy, and those who harmed others will be thrown into a great pit of blazing fire.
There is no other way. That is why focusing on the great Day of Judgment makes perfect sense. That Day is the gate of your life - forever.
The importance of the afterlife is that it lasts and lasts. In this Earth, one's situation may change many times, and one may take the initiative to change things. But in the afterlife, one is no longer in control. That's why we need to prepare while we're still alive.
Maybe it's because if people believe in the fact that they are going somewhere after they bite the dust, then they don't have worry so much about dying in the first place.
The afterlife was the life after death and the egyptains believed that they would be much better in the afterlife. The afterlife was so important to the egyptians because they believed that a preserved body would come to life and they would be happier in the afterlife.

No. Allah is the Arabic word for "God", so this is not a person. However, God is very important in Islam, just as God is important in Christianity.

So that the body can be preserved and the soul can move on to the afterlife.(the egyptians believed in the after life).
They believed that when you go to the afterlife your earthly body goes not your "soul". So they could not desecrate the body in any way or it will remain that way in the afterlife.
