The term was used by the poet WilliamCarlos Williams in the 1930s to describe a movement in which emphasis was placed on viewing poems as objects that could be considered and analyzed to reveal truth. Thus he named this poem after that very movement he himself created. (or maybe it was the other way around….the movement was named after the poem?) = The Term =

A rumpled sheet

of brown paper

about the length and apparent bulk

of a man was

rolling with the wind slowly over

and over in

the street as a car drove down

upon it and

crushed it to the ground. Unlike

a man it rose

again rolling with the wind over

and over to be as

it was before. The analyzed truth of this poem? That we are no more than paper in this harsh, brief life and even paper demonstrates more resiliency than we mere mortals do. A very powerful message. -sincerely, shogg
