Hwy when you flush your upstairs toilet does your downstairs shower drain erupt sewage?

The drain from the toilet to the main drain is plugged and the branch to the shower is not. If the main floor toilet flushes, it is between the two toilets and not between the house and the sewer.

When the washer drains it sucks the water out of the toilet?

Sounds like your washer doesn't have a connection to your "stack pipe". As water moves through a drain pipe, it creates a vacuum behind it, the "stack pipe" or "vent pipe" is usually a pipe that goes through the roof of your house and provides an open air connection to all of your plumbing fixtures so the vacuum is provided a way to suck air rather than sucking the water out of your "P" traps or other fixtures such as your toilet. Chances are your toilet is also "sucking" from your washer, but you just don't notice it. It is also dangerous because if the washer or other fixtures are sucking water out of your "P" traps, then you may be getting methane and other sewer gases into your house. Have a pipe run from washer drain to your vent pipe and this should eliminate the problem. Be sure it connects to the vent pipe because if you ever have a sewer backup, the vent system won't allow the gray water to empty into your house through the air pipe.

What could cause a regular knocking sound from an outside drain not linked to running water which only starts at dusk and finishes at dawn?

Ours does the exact same thing. Weird!! We are thinking it is something to do with the toilet as it is happenning to the drain that runs outside our house near the toilet wall?

Why would an upstairs toilet drain into a downstairs sink?

Answer The waste line from the downstairs toilet is not vented (or not vented properly, or the vent is plugged up). Flushing the upstairs toilet creates a vacuum in the main line which sucks the water out of the one downstairs. Answer your waste lines for both toilets may be on the same branch off the sewer main. Either you have a stoppage in the branch line or you have a stoppage in the main line. (If it's the main line your downstairs toilet would have to be the lowest fixture, ie If you have a floor drain downstairs and it's a stoppage in your main line it would backup through the floor drain. If there is no floor drain the toilet downstairs is probably your lowest fixture.) Your best bet is to snake out the system through the toilet downstairs.
