You could be thinking of a laboratory.

Telescopes in general. Optical telescopes Radio telescopes Gravity wave telescopes
The universe can be explored by astronomical instruments called telescopes, and by space probes sent from earth to other planets. When using telescopes astronomers try to look at the energy being produced by the universe not just in the visible part of the spectrum (where our eyes can see) but at the whole range of electromagnetic radiation. We thus have radio telescopes, infrared telescopes, X-ray telescopes and even some telescopes that are buried deep underground looking for neutrinos. Most of the telescopes are set in mountains for they can rich more.
DO NOT LOOK AT THE SUN WITH A CONVENTIONAL TELESCOPE. Doing so can cause massive eye damage and blindness. Theoretically only the photosphere would be visible anyway.Scientists can use special telescopes (such as ultraviolet telescopes) to see other parts of the sun (such as the corona).
Although possible, it is difficult. On the clearest of nights you could by luck be able to view the milky way, but these situations are extremely rare. Telescopes, for example, with the misconception of larger view, actually replace the eyelense, only providing you with slightly larger vision. Although that is the horrid fact, telescopes are much help in view of the galaxy. So, with the correct equipment and accurate use of tools, it is possible to see the moon and other space objects during the night.

Observatory or astronomical observatory.
An observatory is the name of a place that uses telescopes and other scientific equipment to study space and astronomy. The Mount Polamar Observitory in the west of the US is an iconic example. Today, Earth based observitories are supplimented by space telescopes.
