The Heartbreak Kid
The Heartbreak Kid
Yes, in The Wizard of Oz; yes and no, in Wicked. Author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 5, 1919] explained that the land of Oz had been taken over by four bad witches of the East, North, South, and West. Two of the bad witches had been replaced by the Good Witch of the North, and by Glinda the Good Witch of the South. Dorothy's house landed on, and killed, the Wicked Witch of the East. That left only the Wicked Witch of the West, whom Dorothy killed with a bucket of water. Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954] is one of the writers who have made contributions to the Oz series since the death of the originator. His book Wicked, on which the play of the same name is based, creates a background of abusive interactions, and a life of emotional disappointments, that had their effect on the evolving character of the Wicked Witch of the West, whom he calls Elphaba Thropp.
yes depends on the phone
Answer #1In the book version by author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919], the Wicked Witch of the West remains nameless. She is the owner of the Golden Cap, by which she calls on the aid of the Winged Monkeys; and of the Yellow Castle, from which she enslaves the native peoples of the yellow land of the Winkies. In the 1939 film version of the story, the part of the Witch is played by Margaret Hamilton [December 9, 1902-May 16, 1985].In the novel 'Wicked', upon which the musical of the same name is based, author Gregory Maguire [b. June 9, 1954] gives the Witch the name Elphaba Thropp. In the musical version of the story, the part of Elphaba is played by Idina Kim Menzel [b. May 30, 1971].Answer #2The Wicked Witch of the West (or simply the Wicked Witch) is a character in the fictional land of Oz created by American author L. Frank Baum in his children's book, 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'. The character also figures prominently in the classic 1939 movie based on Baum's book. In these works, the Wicked Witch poses the biggest threat to Dorothy Gale, because she covets the magical pair of silver shoes (ruby slippers in the movie) which previously belonged to the Wicked Witch of the East and are now worn by Dorothy. The Witch has often been used by editorial cartoonists to represent an evil force; for more details see 'Political interpretations of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'. In subsequent Oz books, it is the Nome King who is the principal villain; the Wicked Witch of the West does not appear after the first book, and is rarely referred to again. Despite this, she makes frequent appearances in modern works based on Oz, and as such has been both reimagined and expanded upon a number of times.
