The coastline of Europe is long and complex. It is sometimes unofficially referred to as the Mediterranean, because the Mediterranean is the main sea to the south of Europe, although there are smaller seas adjoining it like the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea.
Because the Mediterranean Sea is on the south of Europe and many of the countries in southern Europe have a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea.

Southern Europe's most fertile land is located mainly in Italy and the Balkan Peninsula, typically along the coastline of the Adriatic or the Black Seas.
France would more commonly be regarded as being in western Europe. However in the southeast of France it has a short coastline along the Mediterranean Sea, and it is the countries on the Mediterranean Sea that are in southern Europe.
The Southern Ocean, also known as the Great Southern Ocean, borders Australia's southern coastline.
Europe has a very jagged coastline which creates a more lengthy coastline. So even though Europe is small it has one of the longest coastlines.
Liechtenstein is a landlocked country in Central Europe and has no coastline.
