What is HFCS?

HFCS stands for high fructose corn syrup. There are two main types of HFCS used in foods and beverages: HFCS-55 and HFCS-42. The numbers represent the amount of fructose in the product. HFCS-55 is composed of 55% fructose with the rest mainly glucose. HFCS-42 is 42% fructose with the rest mainly glucose. HFCS-55 is equally sweet as sugar and is used in sodas and other carbonated beverages as a replacement for sugar. HFCS-42 is slightly less sweet and is used in condiments, dairy products and baked goods. High fructose corn syrup has 4 calories per gram, which is the same as other carbohydrates and caloric sweeteners like sugar, honey, fruit juice concentrates, fructose, etc.

How do you test the pH of liquids like beverages?

With a pH paper or more exactly with a pH-meter.

Does the temperature of juice affect its Ph balance?

Temperature plays a significant role on pH measurement. This is a well-know fact for most users of pH test equipment. However, the temperature affects not only your sensor but also your sample. All solutions will change their pH value with temperature. This is a result of the shifting of the chemical equilibrium of the components, mainly of dissociation.

Is high fructose corn syrup?

What is normal urine pH?

A pH level between 6.5 and 8 is considered healthy for human body. In a pH balanced body, urine is slightly acid in the morning, (pH = 6.5 - 7.0) generally becoming more alkaline (pH = 7.5 - 8.0) by evening in healthy people primarily because no food or beverages are consumed while sleeping.

Is high fructose corn syrup a carbohydrate?

High fructose corn syrup, like other caloric sweeteners, contributes 4 calories per gram. It is not pure fructose. The most common types of high fructose corn syrup used in foods and beverages are HFCS-55 and HFCS-42. The number in the name denotes the percentage of fructose in the composition. So HFCS-55 is 55% fructose with the other 45% mainly glucose. HFCS-42 is 42% fructose with the other 58% mainly glucose. Most caloric sweeteners simply provide calories. Honey does have some protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, but all these components together add up to less than half of a percent (<0.5%). So you'd have to eat a lot to gain any nutritional benefit.
