First, decide what kind of counseling you want to do. There are a number of specalized types requiring different academic tracks than "general talk-therapy counseling": pastoral, drug (CDC), vocational rehab (CRC), school, nutritional, and genetic. There is a supporting counseling modality known as Art Therapy (ATR), which is growing as a recognized profession, often combined with an additional year of schooling to qualify to take the State Board Exam for LPC licensure. While providing a valuable adjunct to talk therapy, Art Therapy is not a substitute for talk or behavioral therapy. It also has the disadvantage of being less respected in organizations, due to misperceptions about the importance of the field, and is likely to suffer first when a workforce is reduced within a facility. It is not unusual to work 2-4 jobs to maintain full-time employment hours. Psychology or Social Work degrees are okay as an undergrad foundation, preparatory for grad level studies in Research Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Clinical Counseling (LPC), Social Work (micro or macro), Vocational Rehab, Drug Rehab, and School Counseling. Psychology majors often elect to pursue the more academic track of testing, research, and Doctoral studies. Some become Psychologists, which is very competitive, and also diverse. Social Work is the more dominant degree in the general counseling field, which is often titled "Community Counseling". The LISW is required for certain positions, which puts some limitation upon the PC, LPC, LPCC, and ATR/LPC. Field experience and classroom hours are roughly equivalent for both branches of Community Counseling professionals. Both are licensed by the same state agency.
