There is more than one plot as the book is subtitled by events that lead to his ultimate destination.

The book 'The Giver' is About a Boy who lives in a small community somewhere, with strict rules about color and emotions, and climate is highly controlled.

Unfortunately, this community has one person whose job is to remember 'regular' life before the changes and regulations were enforced, life much like ours today. (Logically this person is the main character in the book.) He is then faced with a decision, to keep life like it is (and not really live) or to change it and risk it all.

The main theme of "The Giver" is the importance of individuality, emotions, and memories in a society that aims for sameness and control. The novel explores the consequences of suppressing these essential aspects of humanity for the sake of order and stability.

Person-against-self - an internal conflict of feelings.

Person-against-person - the typical protagonist vs. antagonist scenario.

Person-against-society - the protagonist battles against the larger organizations of society

(or a system of beliefs held by society).

Person-against-nature - the protagonist is threatened by a component of nature.

Not everyone agrees on what the main theme of "The Giver" is, but here are some answers:

  • The main themes are love, Death, Memory, and individuality.
  • The theme is: Ignorance is bliss because if you don't know something, it can't hurt you. The community has no emotion or feeling so they don't know what they are doing to the people they release. The Community doesn't know how the real world is and its not hurting them its keeping them being the same
  • There is no such thing as perfection: The government in The Giver shields its citizens from harm's way by removing all means of love, affection, color, emotion, and freedom from its society. In this book, Jonas faces the dilemma of deciding which is better: a life that's not perfect but with freedom, OR a shallow, sheltered life with no sense of oneself.
  • The Importance of Memory: In Jonas's community there is no need for memory. At least that is what those who guide the community believe. Jonas's community does not want its members to experience the pain that memory often brings. But, some memories are pleasant. And, without memory there are no pleasurable recollections either.
  • The Importance of the Individual: As Jonas grew up he ignored differences between people. The members of the community considered it impolite to draw attention to differences between people. As Jonas acquired memories he realized that differences are something to be celebrated and made use of, not ignored.
  • The Value of Freedom to Make Choices: The people in Jonas's community do not make choices. The community's choices have been made by others in the past. A few new choices are made by a small group selected to do that. Most people in the community do not realize that there is a better way. As the story develops, Jonas realizes the importance of making choices even if the wrong choice is sometimes made. The story leads us to realize that the positive results of freedom to make choices outweigh the negative effects, such as making mistakes.
  • There is no real 'theme' to "The Giver", but it centers around a young boy named Jonas who is chosen for a very important assignment in his Community.

Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices.Every person is assigned a role in a Community.

When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to recieve special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and plesure of life. Now it's time for Jonas to recieve the truth. There is no holding back.
