Because when you are modeling a ship in a software, you have to project your marklines against the hull. Thoses lines are then used to extrude the bulb bar profile. this line represent the lower left corner of the bulb bar if you look at it like the letter "P". due to the shape of a normal ship, if you place the bulb all in the same direction (forward), the lower right corner of the "P" will intersect with the shell plates at the front of the ship or at the rear if you place the bulb facing backward. it as notting to do with structural strenght hope this help D.G. ship designer
