The Y chromosome affects the gender of a baby, the combinations can be XX (female) and XY (male). Mitochondrial DNA is inherited from the mother and codes for the energy-producing structures known as mitochondria. It is thought that a long time ago mitochondria and cells were separate, but then a cell ingested a mitochondrion and, realising the advantages, did not digest it. This is known as the endosymbiont theory and ties in nicely with Darwin's theory of evolution (survival of the fittest/most adapted).
