In February of 1864 Union soldiers who set out from Jacksonville,and headed West. As they made their way toward Tallahassee(Florida's Capitol) they were confronted by Confederate forces and a battle ensued at a place called Olustee or Ocean Pond. The Union forces were defeated and retreated back to Jacksonville.As a result,Tallahassee holds the distinction of being the only Confedrate State Capitol east of the Mississippi River never to be conquered and occupied by Union Forces.
