1953 is not a rare date for Roosevelt dimes. Circulated, its value is determined by the fact that it's made of 90% silver. The price of silver changes a lot, so the best way to determine its melt value is to take the current price of silver and multiply it by 0.072.

Uncirculated:

Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter next to the base of the torch. It may be blank or there may be a D or S.

No mint mark (Philadelphia): $4.00 to $1340.00 depending on quality

"D" mint mark (Denver): $4.00 to $1060.00

"S" mint mark (San Francisco): $4.00 to $1750.00
