Several billion were made. This is a very common date with no added value in circulated condition. A nice uncirculated one may be worth about 25 cents. Billions of nickels were minted in 1964 as a stopgap effort to substitute for higher-denomination silver coins that were being removed from circulation for melting. They show up in circulation more than almost any other date.
1964 cents and nickels still show up in change regularly, and are only worth face value. Huge numbers of cents and nickels were churned out in 1964 to help with change-making when people started melting higher-denomination silver coins for their metal value. To show how common this date is, even a nice uncirculated 1964 nickel sells for less than 60 cents!
Mint Marks
Up to 1964 the mint mark position on Jefferson nickels was on the back to the right of Monticello (except during WW2 - above the dome) Also nickels minted in Philadelphia did not carry a "P" mint mark until 1980.
Metal composition
Regardless of popular misconceptions, all 1964 nickels are made of an alloy of 25% nickel and 75% copper, the same metal used in all nickels except those minted during WWII.
Many 1964 Jefferson nickels are still in circulation today because it was the first year to have more than 1 BILLION made, so unless it's a Proof or Mint State coin, it's face value.
