What is the value of an 1878 US half dollar?

Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter under the eagle. It may be blank or there may be a CC or (unlikely) an S.

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $31

Moderately worn - $60

Slightly worn - $84

Almost no wear - $268

Uncirculated - $480 to $8,190 depending on quality

"CC" mint mark (Carson City):

Very worn - $780

Moderately worn - $1,620

Slightly worn - $2,160

Almost no wear - $6,154

Uncirculated - $10,560 to $44,380

If the coin has an "S" mint mark (San Francisco) it should be authenticated to make sure it's not a fake. 1878-S halves are very rare, with the following values:

Very worn - $25,000

Moderately worn - $46,880

Slightly worn - $54,380

Almost no wear - $70,880

Uncirculated - $87,500 to $237,500
