There are 4 different major varieties of the 1878 Morgan Dollar. In addition there are 3 separate mint marks. Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter above the DO in DOLLAR. It may be blank or there may be a CC or S.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 01/2012:

No mint mark (Philadelphia), 8 tail feathers:

Very worn condition - $36

Moderately worn - $39

Slightly worn - $40

Almost no wear - $47

Uncirculated - $103 to $58,130 depending on quality

No mint mark, 7 tail feathers over 8 feathers:

Very worn - $36

Moderately worn - $39

Slightly worn - $40

Almost no wear - $56

Uncirculated - $113 to $33,130

No mint mark, 7 feathers:

Very worn - $30

Moderately worn - $39

Slightly worn - $40

Almost no wear - $43

Uncirculated - $60 to $21,880

No mint mark, 7 feathers, same reverse die as 1879-dated coins

Very worn - $36

Moderately worn - $39

Slightly worn - $40

Almost no wear - $45

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
