Traditional approach to linguistics is the earliest of the approaches to the language study. The Greeks influenced this approach and emphasized on the inflexibility of the language. They considered the language used by the great writers as the only correct form and any deviant variety of it was considered impure. The Latin grammarians took forth this approach and used this Greek model to describe any language. This approach dealt only with the written form and was prescriptive in nature i.e they gave the usage prior to the use. Plato, Aristotle, Protgoras etc. are some of the pioneers of this approach.

On the other hand, structural approach to linguistics came into existence in the late 19th century. Here, the linguists like Saussure, Bloomfield, Whorf, Harris etc. emphasized on structures and gave the concepts like diachrony vs synchrony, langue vs parole, tabula rasa etc. They looked at the language learning through the vision of behaviorist psychologists. They gave importance to the spoken form of the language.

What are two types of linguistic?

Theoretical linguistics is a more "scientific" approach to linguistics. This branch seeks to explore and define the structure of language, from its grammar to its sounds (phonemes) to the way it is represented symbolically. Descriptive linguistics is a more "people-centered" approach. This branch concerns itself with how a language is shaped by, and helps to shape, the history and society of its speakers. A third branch, applied linguistics, is more recent and less academic than the two traditional branches. This field is concerned with practical applications of linguistics to everyday problems in other fields such as psychology and education.

What is the difference between traditional grammar and modern linguistics.?

firstly, modern liguistic is DESCRIPTIVE(to describe the way people speak) , whilst traditional grammar is PRESCRIPTIVE(to prescribe the way people speak, or simply, to tell people how to speak and let people know the correct way of their speaking )secondly, tradition grammar pays more attention to the written form of language, while linguistics attaches more importance to speaking than writing.thirdly, tradtional grammar has been restricted mainly to SYNTAX, that is, the way of words making patterns to form sentences, while linguistics has a boarder scope for researching, eg. pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, ect. which, accordingly, are out of the scope of traditional grammar.of course, there are other differences between the old and new appoaches to language research, such as Diachronic vs Synchronic and so....
