What is wax used for in braces?

- People get wax from their dentists or sometimes are recommended to buy wax to protect your gums. Sometimes when you first get braces they can feel like they are rough against the inside of your mouth so you are told to get a special kind of wax that you heat up with hot water and mold to the metal to protect your mouth.

- Then there is another kind where it's pretty much for the same perpose - protecting your mouth if the braces start making marks in your mouth where they press against it, or just make your inner-lips or gums hurt - Anyway, this kind is just wax that you easily mold, and put on the part of the braces that's causing the problem. But without melting it on with heat, like the other kind.

It is to put on parts of braces that rub on your gums or the inside of your cheeks. It usually comes in a small case, and has several strips of wax inside it. When part of your brace is rubbing on your mouth, you break a small piece off, and roll it into a ball, and stick it on the part that is rubbing. It may also be used on things like palette expander's, Nance retainers, bands for braces, brackets on braces, hooks, etc. Your orthodontist will also tell you how to use it.

It's called Orthodontic Wax and it is used to put over top of brackets, as they may irritate the inside of your lips for a while. The wax is applied, and makes it smooth so that there isn't pain for the inside of your mouth.
