Pain in the buttock could be caused by many conditions. Most frequently this is a simple case of sacroiliac joint disfunction or hypertonic gluteal musculature. The fact that the pain does not travel into the thigh suggests that this is not a severe problem; usually the further the pain travels down the leg, the worse the underlying cause. Of course, based purely on a one sentence description, no one can be certain of the problem. Someone with pain as described above has two general options: 1) wait and see if it gets better, as it probably will over time 2) see a trained health care professional (eg: chiropractor) to get a diagnosis and see if the pain can be alleviated sooner than natural history will provide.
If the pain does not get better as soon as you would like, or gets worse over time, your best course of action would be to see a health care professional.
