What is Wrong with Cities?
There are lots of problems when it comes to urban cities. Here are just the biggest problems with them:
Housing - Homelessness is a big problem with cities. 100 million people worldwide are homeless and up to a billion may be living in insufficient housing.
Health - The urban poor are at greater risk than anyone else in the world because they don't have enough money to buy food or medicine to get rid of disease.
Pollution - Pollution is one of the most dangerous parts of cities, because air pollution from cars, cooking, heating, and industry can be deadly.
Safety and Crime - Urban violence has increased all over the world over the past two decades. There is much more theft/burglary than assault and murder. Still, violent crime is increasing and now makes up over one quarter of urban offences in many countries.
These are not problems that must exist simply because cities exist. They are often the results of poor income distribution (a few people with high incomes, many people with low incomes) and bad policy. They can be overcome and in many places they have been overcome.
