My personal view - they are criminals ! Whether that's the nerdy school-kid trying to bypass their school's security so they can chat on social networking sites - or the hardened criminal intent on crippling a company's whole computer system.

My view is that it depends on the circumstances, If you are trying to sabotage and cause damage to property, or hacking for illegal monetary gain, then they are despicable! However so called "Hacktivism" or hacking for political means, or to prove a point, is more of a moral grey area.
