What does an 595 stamp on a piece of jewelry mean?

It almost always means that the piece of jewelry is Gold Plated over a Silver piece of Jewelry I work in the jewelry business and the above answer is incorrect. 585 is the stamp for a peice that is 14K gold. If it is plated it will have additional letters such as GE for gold electroplate or GF for gold filled. If it is stamped 585 P that stands for plum and has been tested to be 14K solid gold.

What does 585 stamped on jewelry mean?

On a gold ring the stamp 585 is meant to indicate that it is 58.5%, or 14 karat gold. However, I urge anyone wishing to buy jewelry to be very careful when judging gold by the marking. If you are dealing with a reputable jewelry store or jeweler, you are probably safe.

What does the stamp 585 on a pearl necklace mean?

On a gold ring the stamp 585 is meant to indicate that it is 58.5%, or 14 karat gold. However, I urge anyone wishing to buy jewelry to be very careful when judging gold by the marking. If you are dealing with a reputable jewelry store or jeweler, you are probably safe but remember, if you stamp 14 k on a pile of dog poop, it's still a pile of dog poop. Stamps are easy to get and it's better to insist that the gold be tested while you watch or test it yourself before you buy than to realize you have been taken later.

What does an 685 stamp on a piece of jewelry mean?

Pure gold content is often represented in decimal %'s for example 14 karat is represented as .585 [14 / 24 = .585]. In the case of 14k 58.5% of the jewelry stamped is pure gold [ 24k ]. While the remainder 41.5 % is alloys { other metals added to the pure gold to make it more durable and / or to change its color i.e. white] I suspect that your piece of jewelry is of European manufacture and is approx. 16 karat. However stampings are often hard to read , is it possible that your 685 could actually be 585?
