Italians may have jobs in churches, as administrative and religious staff. Or they may have jobs in family businesses, such as boutiques and restaurants. Or they may have jobs in hostels and hotels. Or they may have jobs in industryand manufacturing, such as leather workers. Or they may have jobs in international corporations that have offices in Italy. Or they may have jobs in municipal, provincial and national government. Or they may have jobs in medicine, such as doctors in hospitals and nurses in clinics. Or they may have jobs in regional organizations, such as the European Union and the North Atlantic Defense Organization. Or they may have jobs in research, such as scientists and statisticians. Or they may have jobs in international, private and public schools. Or they may have jobs in tourist industries, such as tour guides and travel agents.
So basically, Italians have the same jobs as a person in any other country might have.
Italians always have done agricultural work. The climate and the land cooperate in the growing of many edibles. They also always have done artistic and craft work. Italians have a reputation in all places and times for excellence in such activities as jewelry making and designing, metal and wood work, painting, and sculpting. Also, they always have done building, construction and engineering work. Italian architecture is one of the reasons that tourists come to Italy. It's another reason why visitors buy summer or year round homes. They always have done fishing and water related work too. Italy is surrounded by water on three sides in terms of the mainland peninsula, and on all sides in terms of the Italian islands of Sardinia and Sicily. They too always have done work in food production, preparation and sales. The quality of Italian ingredients and meals is one of the reasons that tourists come to Italy. It's another reason why Italians tend to be welcome as grocery store and restaurant operators elsewhere in the world. And they always have done work in such paper related activities as being traders, operating banks, owning businesses, and writing.

Italian immigrants may have started out in constructionwork. They may have started out in domestic service. They may have started out in fishing and water work. They may have started out in kitchen cleaning help.
But Italian immigrants were known for working hard and saving money. So they quickly changed over to holding down better paying jobs and even owning their own businesses and companies. A reason why they were able to make the changeover so quickly and so successfully was their forming of Italian cultural associations and related support groups. Another reason was the quality product that they offered in their adopted homelands. Be it craftsmanship or food or whatever, Italian immigrants offered a strong individual work ethic and a solid cultural legacy of meticulous attention to detail in many employable areas.
As with most new immigrants they worked hard to make a living and to have a nice place to live with their families. Many stayed in the New York area and created a district of NYC called Little Italy. Many opened stores and restaurants in Little Italy and became part of their community through the church and service clubs they formed.
