In July 1945 Berlin was divided into 4 zones. These were occupied by the UK, the USSR, the USA and France. In 1949 the British, French and American zones joined to become West Germany, and the USSR zone was the Eastern Germany. Stalin (the USSR leader) believedthat in 1948 that all road, rail and canal links with West Germany should be blocked. The Airlift was then introduted by the US to ensure that food and other supplies could get to there sections of Berlin. The airlift was vital to ensure the wel-being of the citizens of West Berlin.

As I understand it nobody died due to the Soviet blockade of Berlin. The US Air Force began flying in supplies long before that would have become an issue. A few deaths did result from airplane crashes during the airlift operations to supply Berlin. However of course some people did die during the period of the Soviet blockade of Berlin but those were from the usual causes people die from and were not directly connected to the blockade.
Why was the burlin wall built?
The communists built the Berlin Wall to keep the people from East Berlin from escaping to West Berlin. As the communists took over more and more of the economy they made a bigger and bigger mess of things. West Berlin had prosperity; East Berlin had poverty. More and more of the competent people of East Berlin simply walked across the border. As a result, the communists had to build a wall to keep their people inside. We have learned from communism that government is totally incompetent when it tries to run business. Today with the property collapse we have also learned that we have real problems when the government does not regulate!

If you are talking about the Berlin Blockade it came long before the Berlin wall was built. The famous Berlin Blockade began in June 1948 and didn't end until May 1949. The Berlin Blockade was the result of the Soviets blocking all roads between West Berlin and West Germany, meaning there was no supply of food to West Berlin. This led to the Berlin Airlift where the western powers dropped food parcels into West Berlin. The Berlin Wall wasn't built until 1961,due to the fact that many East Berliners were escaping to West Berlin due to the better living conditions in the west. Although this had been going on for years. In the day before the wall was erected 5000 people fled East Berlin. The first wire version of the wall was built overnight and separated east and West Berlin for 29 years until it was torn down in 1989. I hope this helps.
