Newer gold filled items have markings that indicate how much and what type of gold was used for the layer. A marking that says 1/20 12K G.F. means that the jewelry is at least 1/20th 12K gold by weight

not usually.If you see something like 12/20 or 14/20 it is gold filled jewellery- 1 20th 12 karat gold or 1 20th 14 karat gold respectively.No international standard exists for marking plated items..gold filled though is always stamped.It can also be real gold and have no stamp if its an old piece of jewelry before stamping became internationally standardised..

Pure gold has the marking "24K"

Less then pure, but homogeneous alloy have marking

like "18K" "9K" "10goldfilled" etc. Plating does not and

should not have marking
