As far as types of medical school, there are two types in the United States that award you with a Degree in Medicine, one is the most commonly known and is simply Medical School which churns you out as a doctor of allopathic medicine (M.D.), whereas the other is Osteopathic Medical Schools which which results in you becoming a doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.). While the gap between the two used to be relatively large, that has long since closed. With the exception of some diagnosing and treatment techniques, and acceptance rates for school, both schools graduate medical doctors that are equally capable. To get into either, you will need a strong GPA, MCAT score, solid letters of recommendation, and excellent extracurricular activities for your resume as well as honed interviewing skills. On top of this you need the willpower necessary to complete the entire course of medical school. After medical school, you apply for residency programs which will then allow you to carry a specialty; even after this some opt for a fellowship which results in further specialization in a given field.
