Tanks ( first used in the Somme campaign), miitary aircraft including Zeppelins, Fighters and bombers, Submarines, all were used big-time in the Great War along with more subtle devices as sound location detectors by Czarist Russia and much spy technology, also by the Russians. The White Russian Blockade Runners, that is a story that could use some cinematic revivals, indeed Resurgence, pun intended. Some were destroyer-like fast transports and others may have been submarines. Russian subs had siphon breathing devices before the Germans came up with the Snorkel. Ideally, you could get her down to siphon depth ( if batteries were fully charged and engines running normally) in 30 seconds. These Siphon equipped subs operated with Surface Task Forces- One per major Task Group- like in the Battleship game. They would seek out possible enemy subs, and engage them if they posed a threat ( as U-boats could easily do) to the Task Force.
