The Soviet Union supported communist revolutions in many countries, on the theory that capitalist systems are unjust and need to be overthrown. There was a constant maneuvering for power between the communist bloc, which was largely controlled by the Soviet Union, and the free world led by the US. Nuclear arsenals were used by both sides as a deterrent to any direct form of attack.

To understand that we need to understand the Cold War as much as it can be understood.The USA and its Allies Against The Soviet Union and its Allies like Cuba.The whole Cold War was based on the idea of a deterrent called "Mutually Assured Destruction" With the entirely appropriate acronym of "MAD".The USA had used their influence and Allies to place Medium and Short Range Nuclear Missiles in Europe targeting the Soviet Block Countries.The Soviet Union had no equivalent Deterrent targeting Mainland USA.Cuba wanted to be supportive of their Friends in Communist Soviet Union and as they were very unhappy with the USA and the embargo that had harmed their Economy.So these factors lead to the placement of Soviet medium range Missiles in Cuba and the Cuban Missile crises .
