General Lee was presented with a chance to gain momentum by his victory at the Second Battle of Bull Run. A summary of Lee's alternatives are based on the following:1. Lee's victory at the Second Battle of Bull Run left the Army of the Potomac demoralized and weakened;

2. By forcing the enemy's retreat, it gave the South access to more supplies in terms of food and other needed supplies;

3. The Union's retreat gave Lee the opportunity to cross the Potomac River and cause the Union's high command to grasp at straws in order to prevent Lee from crossing the Potomac River;

4. Crossing the Potomac River would be seen by the Union as a threat to Washington DC;

5. In Maryland, Lee could collect supplies and provisions;

6. By being in Maryland, there was no danger of a Union attempt to attack Richmond; and

7. If being able to remain in Maryland until the Winter of 1862, this too would impede any attempts by the Union to enter Virginia due to the bad Winter conditions often seen in Virginia;

8. He could plan on being able to remain in Maryland and have a defensive flank position visa vie the Army of the Potomac; and

9. Should Lee be able to remain in Maryland, the off year 1862 elections would aid the South as more seats in Congress would be taken by war Democrats. A more friendly Northern element than the radical republicans.
